Is this odd, or have I lead a sheltered life?

My baking this morning was interupted by this:
baby egg!

Tiny egg, shell complete, inside another egg. I can't decide whether to be freaked out, or think it's the coolest thing ever. (Well, maybe not ever.

Is this a common phenomenon.

Is that how you spell phenomenon?

I think it is the coolest thing ever! While being quite freaky. Ooh. Have you cracked open the little one to see if it has an even smaller one? Russian eggs.

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No Russian eggs - see my next post. YUK.

Agreed--that is freaky kewl. I've never seen or heard of it happening.

And, yes, you've spelled it correctly. :)

Yay for spelling.
Euw for eggs!

According to a quick bit of research (mainly because it freaked me out so much), "egg-within-egg"s are rare enough to be considered very unusual, but common enough to be recognized as a type of egg malformation. Here are a couple of cool links (the second one is actually a link from the first):

http://www.poultryhelp.com/oddeggs.html (scroll down to Egg Within an Egg)
http://www.poultryhelp.com/visphot3.html

And yup, you spelled phenomenon perfectly. :-)

ETA that the first site I gave you--the "odd eggs" one--has a note on the bottom of the page asking for people to send them pictures. So you might consider submitting the one above.

Thanks - I sent the original, and am now about to send the other one - taken after I cracked the mini egg.

All very odd and unsettling.

I have to admit that I'm rather freaked out about this O.o

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's rather gross isn't it - and it gets worse once I finally cracked teh mini egg!

Oh, freaky! :D

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuk, is what I say!

[identity profile] racric.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh I'm jealous. It's rare but it does happen. I've never had one but I've had "rubber eggs" which are just eggs with soft rubbery shells. I give away most of my eggs but no one's ever reported back that they've gotten a double. Can I post your picture on my petpoultry group?

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Feel free - post away!

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I cracked the mini egg (photo in a separate post) - very wierd stuff.

Duh. It should have dawned on me that you'd probably know the answer, without having to do the research. But I am research-chick, so there you go. Nice to have outside confirmation, though. :-)

(Oh, and have fun this weekend!)

this is freakly fascinating! But what is inside the other one???????

That's what I want to know, but me with my imagination has decided it's a chick or something! EEEKS!

This is *so weird*!

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I had all sorts of horrible imaginings too! I finally cracked though (groan!) - see my next post for a picture of teh contents!

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I eventually dared to crack the mini egg - I posted teh picture in a sep post.

[identity profile] ugerchucker.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That is weird. Did you check the other one? Wonder if it tastes different.

[identity profile] lolabobs.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I did break teh other one - posted pc seperately.

As for the taste - there's no way on earth I'd have tasted it/used it!

[identity profile] whatho.livejournal.com 2009-09-11 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW. I came home to this and found it sufficiently exciting to share with my entire family. They all sounded scared.

I was most perturbed
