My baking this morning was interupted by this:
baby egg!

Tiny egg, shell complete, inside another egg. I can't decide whether to be freaked out, or think it's the coolest thing ever. (Well, maybe not ever.

Is this a common phenomenon.

Is that how you spell phenomenon?

I think it is the coolest thing ever! While being quite freaky. Ooh. Have you cracked open the little one to see if it has an even smaller one? Russian eggs.

No Russian eggs - see my next post. YUK.

Agreed--that is freaky kewl. I've never seen or heard of it happening.

And, yes, you've spelled it correctly. :)

According to a quick bit of research (mainly because it freaked me out so much), "egg-within-egg"s are rare enough to be considered very unusual, but common enough to be recognized as a type of egg malformation. Here are a couple of cool links (the second one is actually a link from the first):

http://www.poultryhelp.com/oddeggs.html (scroll down to Egg Within an Egg)
http://www.poultryhelp.com/visphot3.html

And yup, you spelled phenomenon perfectly. :-)

ETA that the first site I gave you--the "odd eggs" one--has a note on the bottom of the page asking for people to send them pictures. So you might consider submitting the one above.

Thanks - I sent the original, and am now about to send the other one - taken after I cracked the mini egg.

All very odd and unsettling.

Oooh I'm jealous. It's rare but it does happen. I've never had one but I've had "rubber eggs" which are just eggs with soft rubbery shells. I give away most of my eggs but no one's ever reported back that they've gotten a double. Can I post your picture on my petpoultry group?

Duh. It should have dawned on me that you'd probably know the answer, without having to do the research. But I am research-chick, so there you go. Nice to have outside confirmation, though. :-)

(Oh, and have fun this weekend!)

WOW. I came home to this and found it sufficiently exciting to share with my entire family. They all sounded scared.
