Whatever Lola Wants....

Aladdin!
Hurrah! I made it - second time lucky!!
It was Paulie! Paulie in Panto!
Reportage:
We got there about 30 minutes early - as a) I was a bit hyper and b) I wanted to trawl around, gathering flyers and bits and pieces.... Of which there were none! Last year there were cut outs and flyers and pamphlets and so on - and there were none. I manfully resisted the urge to buy an "Aladdin bucket" full of popcorn and drinks and rubbish - and two Aladdin stickers - Paulies face.... This was £10 squids so I didn't give in - which was a triumph actually 'cos I'm a bit of an impulse obsessive buyers in situations ike that. I did buy a programme of course!
Well then. I settled Mum into her seat and then went and found my own. It was here:

*So* close. I was the end seat and my feet were actually touching the steps leading onto stage. For ages I was the only person sat there and I felt so stupid! I didn't think I'd be bothered being there on my own, but I got really stressy and was frantically texting and trying to calm myself. The seating was really cramped(Not like the Bromley theatre last year, that was very swish!)and our knees touched the front of teh orchestra pit. (Which was fun half way through when slave boys ran down the aisle and then across teh front row! I had a 'machete' held to my throat!)
Once the rows filled (entire front row - 1 child, the rest were adults!) and teh lights dimmed I felt better! I couldn't take photos after that - would have been a bit obvious I was practically on the stage!. But Paul opened the show on his hands and knees (!) and interacting with the audience right from the start. As last year he seemed to be enjoying himself, and was very enthusiastic.
Throughout Paul was very close to the other cast members, right up in their faces being threatening etc. He seemd to connect well with Sheila Ferguson, lots of eye contact and half grins! His costume:

was very sumptious,(eta and on closer inspection wasn't this at all! - false advertising - he had stripeytrousers, and a velvety shirt, covered with a long gown and wearing a red turban affair) but a little disappointing for the fan girl in me - consisting as it did of an ankle length robe - none of his physique was displayed and when, at one point he stood his foot on Aladdin, he was wearing normal black sneakeresque shoes - no lovely thigh high boots this time around!!!
There was however a lot more nods to Starsky and Hutch - he refered to once being in the LAPD and Starsky was mentioned a few times, including in one scene with the Widow Twanky where they embraced and 'she' swooned "Starsky!" and he replied with "Oh Hutch, You're too much!"
He did a great routine with his "Oh yes you are, oh no you aren't"s, whch he repeated each time, culminating in a lovely little shuddery growly thing!
He sang two songs, the first of which made my night! (Warning: Very spurious link of the easily pleased coming up!) He sang a converted version of Whatever Lola Wants.... Lola gets - What Abanazer wants... As he cajoled and hypnotised Aladdin around the stage!
It was traditional panto through and through - I thought it was more adult orientated than last years, and found it more humourous - or maybe, more wordy, pun, wordplay humour rather than slapstick although there was plenty of both. It was great fun, Paul seemed happy to be there.
Oh, the dame was huge though, really tall, and he made Paulie seem quite petite and vulnerable! Although Paul used a glowering and deliciously OTT stage present to make up for that!
It was fab, and I'm very glad I finally got to see it!
Oh and coming home? I avoided the worst of the roadworks and got home in 6 hours! Very glad to be here!
