It rained heartily throughout the early afternoon - so much so that my brother stopped en route to buy a pack-a-mac thing - but it dried out by early evening, and become ludicrously, ridiculously muggy. Sweating and clammy and just yuk. The venue was much much smaller thanI anticipated (I have never been to a footie match, so had no frame of reference) We got there early though and got a good spot to the side, but near to the runways and good view - we were about 25 people back.
Support was Sophie Ellis Bexter, who turned up wearing bright green tin foil and singing all of her songs without actually changing the backing track - or so it seemed. You don't realise just how samey her songs are until you hear them one after the other!
Then we waited for George(and waited and waited). We were standing on duckboards on top of the pitch, so was really tough on the feet and as the evening progressed it got fuller and hotter and more and more cramped. It was horrible in that respect. I mean I went to Knebworth to see Robbie with 125,000 and it felt less crowded.
George finally arrived - he looked and sounded fantastic. Wonderfully strong voice, clear and very focussed. The concert really lacked something though. There were long long pauses between songs - he'd sing a number, then when it was ended would walk to the side, have a drink, wipe his face and loiter. His musicians would move the instruments and there'd be a period of silence. There was no energy. He stopped for an interval too, which seemed unusual.
The second half was more livelythough, he seemed a bit more up, and they managed to keep music playing between songs. However by this point the crush had gotten ridiculous and people were touching you on all sides, pressed in and I got to feeling like I couldn't breath - So I forced my way out, went to the loo, bought a drink and when I came back I stayed on the outskirts - and it was much better there - there was room to move and dance, I could still see perfectly well and there was blessed fresh air! I maybe fail a little at concerts (not that I've had a problem before)
So there it was. (Robbie was better both times, he really works the audience, George seemed distanced somehow)
Now I'm knackered and my feet ache! I've somehow forgotton to eat lunch and am meeting family for dinner at 7, and am starved but it's too late to eat anything now!
