I hadn't xpected that ending at all, but it was rather wonderful. I liked Sam's little double take when Dean agreed to seperate.
And I said I hadn't expected it, but I should have -it was built up throughout the episode. The removal of the amulet - Dean's instinctive 'NO', but then recognising that he *has* to let it go.
The shove between Sam and Dean, when Sam pushed Dean away.
Sam insisting they separate throughout the early stages of teh 'war'
Dean *not* rushing immediately to Sam's rescue, but putting duty first and thinking things through.
Dean working through the omens *without* Sammy.
And that's rather fantastic.
And Dean offering Sam the Imapala? Oh. That was his Daddy's car. The car he watched his Dad buy. That was the car that John made snarky remarks about, when he didn't keep it clean. The car that Dean trashed when John died and then rebuilt. He was offering Sam his heart and his Daddy's protection, not just a car.
And Sam said no.
I'm not upset by the ending. It felt right and clean and part of a healing process. It was an inevitable parting, not one of anger.
And now Dean has no Sammy, no Bobby, no Daddy. It's just him and the Impala. (And an avenging Angel.) [So we've got Dean and his Daddy issues, and Castiel's bound to have a few around his father... I love this show.
Ellen was kickass too!
