I read new Reacher and am filled afresh with utter disbelief (DISBELIEF) that they think Tom Cruise can in any way, shape or form essay Jack Reacher. What were they thinking? And everytime I read Lee Child saying how he's sure Tom will be just FINE, then I imagine the words turning to sawdust in his mouth and him choking on them. Do you think he made some kind of deal with the devil and instead of going to hell in exchange for his success, he has to stand by and support dreadful, dreadful casting? It's the only possible explanation.

IDK, I remember them saying the same thing about him playing Lestat back in 1994, and that turned out great.

Oh, I'll be happy to be proven wrong, I can eat humble pie with the best of them :P

At the moment I find it hard to see because whilst I do think Tom can act, his whole energy feels wrong for Reacher.

But I will watch the new movie and I will do so hoping to be blown away.

(And I'll try not to whinge to much in the interim!!)

Totally agree. That is whack casting. Reacher is formidable enough
To always be drawing attention to that fact. Tom could play a businessman
Caught in Reacher's case. I think it's disappointing but will still
See movie as I've wondered for years why there weren't any.

Yes, Tom is full of high energy and calls attention, Reacher has a very solid, self assured, quiet energy. He need to be big and solid and, well, not Tom.

But as you, I will check out the movie, hoping to be proven wrong.

You've got to be joking. Every Reacher book includes at least one description of him as about six foot four and very heavily muscular. So much of the way he behaves, and thinks about solutions to problems, revolves around the fact that he is a huge powerful guy who can physically dominate a situation. I can't see Cruise being able to pull that off.

I was astonished when I heard, I try not to do the screaming up and down thing, but then I read one of the books and, as you say, it emphasises anew the way his size informs his actions, his massive self confidence and assurance, the way he presnts as calm and in control and ...

Pah. The casting feels wrong - I will be delighted to be proven wrong but I'm notgoing to bet on it.
